Mountain Solar Design and Heron Construction
Heron Construction has been in business since 1987 designing and building passive solar homes. In 1995 I designed and built the first straw bale home in Gunnison County. At the time it took 18 months to get a building permit because of doubts from the building department on straw bale building technology. Since then I have designed and built two other straw bale homes, both Energy Star rated at HERS 44 and 33 respectively. These Energy Star homes, because of their high energy efficiency, have retained resale and appraisal values even as the value of a stud framed home has withered. A tested home can appraise at a higher value, because the home owner can be assured of much smaller energy costs to sustain a comfortable home, even during long Gunnison winters.
